2012 RAD Best Use of Mobile (Jan 2012)

YHA employ up to 600 seasonal workers every year to work amongst a network of 200 hostels and barns across the UK, the majority being technology savvy students and graduates. Individually the recruitment experience was strong, with the YHA values embraced, however they found this varied hugely from hostel to hostel and communication amongst the network was poor. YHA asked us to improve communications and align employees closer to the brand to improve engagement and retention. The YHA Social World We went 1 step further. Not only did we want to improve engagement and retention, we also felt we could use this as an attraction tool too. We developed the YHASociaWorld, the first company social networking website unmoderated and available to all. Building on the EVP that YHA is about getting out what you put in, and a lifestyle job, we wanted employees to share their experiences to engage with others and realise they are part of something much bigger that the individual hostel.

The background In 2008 we embarked on a journey with YHA. When we met, recruitment was relied upon placing mono adverts (in various styles) in the press, open days and handling applications by post. With no recruitment website or branding outside of the consumer brand, YHA were finding it almost impossible to engage with their 18 ? 25 year old target audience. YHA was still perceived as an old, traditional and 'dusty' organisation with candidates and customers alike. This couldn't be further from the truth, however competing with modern campsites, hotels such as Premier Inn and Travel Lodge for accommodation, they were struggling to resonate with their target audience. Recruitment was run through expensive recruitment agencies and direct sourcing was next to nothing. 2010 Roses Awards (May 2010)

Terry the Humaphibian, for Blandford Sub Aqua picked up its second and third award with a win at the Roses Awards 2010 in Manchester. The awards were in BEST RECRUITMENT ADVERT, and BEST USE OF PHOTOGRAPHY. With Trevor Beattie, the Chairman of judges it was no mean feat!
